Many people spend a lot of their time driving, whether doing errands or going to and from work each day. Others enjoy driving as a pastime for visiting friends, relatives or going on vacation. When we are making courier deliveries in Richmond, VA we encounter all types of drivers. A vehicle can be dangerous if you don’t operate it proficiently. Keeping yourself and others from harm is essential. Here are some tips to help you drive safely no matter where you are going. KNOW YOUR VEHICLE Before driving a new vehicle, be sure you are familiar with all of the safety features in the car. It is helpful to familiarize yourself with a new car before a long trip. Take it for a ride through your neighborhood. Get to know the vehicle. BE WELL RESTED WHEN YOU DRIVE. Falling asleep at the wheel or even just being drowsy is dangerous. You could easily cause a serious accident. Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. If you are drowsy, pull over and take a nap or call someone to come pick you up. USE BLUETOOTH When using GPS, connect to the car audio system via Bluetooth, so you don’t need to look at your phone. You can also let your passenger do the navigating. DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE. In fact, any activity which involves looking at your phone when you should be looking out the window of your car is dangerous. It splits your concentration and may lead to a severe accident. LET SOMEONE ELSE DRIVE If you are taking medication or have been drinking alcohol, have someone drive you or pick you up. Driving intoxicated leads to possible accidents and potential death. Rider services like Uber and Lyft are a great option. KNOW YOUR LIMITS Some people can see well enough to drive during daylight, but at night, they are sight-impaired. If you have trouble seeing in the dark, ask a friend for a ride. PREPARE FOR UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES Keep a safety kit in your car for mishaps and accidents. Include at minimum an extra tire, jumper cables, small shovel, salt for cold climates, and a little first aid kit. KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING If you are traveling, study the area you are moving through before you leave, so you are familiar with roadways and safe areas to stop. You can get information online or by calling local chambers of commerce. TAKE CARE OF YOUR VEHICLE Modern vehicles are precision instruments that must be kept fine-tuned. When repairs and maintenance are kept up to date, cars perform and respond better. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT Wear seat belts at all times when driving or riding in a vehicle. Statistics have proven that wearing seat belts saves lives during accidents. PASSENGERS SHOULD ALSO WEAR SEATBELTS Make sure passengers in your car wear seat belts, and if they are children, have seat belts or car seats appropriately sized for them. Car seats can be rented. AVOID HAULING OR TRANSPORTING BULK ITEMS Transporting boxes, containers and other bulk items can be difficult. You must adequately secure your items. Boxes can fall off your vehicle and hurt bystanders or cause accidents. A loose box can slide and block your view. If this is difficult, you may want to contact a delivery service like ours. Remember that vehicles can absorb much more damage than people can. Do your best to stay safe and keep your passengers and pedestrians safe as well.
